Name: Klarth F. Lester. (also known as “Claus” in the English version)
Fandom: Tales of Phantasia.
Gender: Male.
Age: 29.
Time Period: Post-game.
Wing Color: Sky blue.
History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_Phantasia#Plot
Personality: As is the norm in every Tales game, there must always be a loveable geek in the party. For Tales of Phantasia, this geek is Klarth F. Lester. While only twenty-nine years old, he already acts like a renowned, middle-aged scholar. Upon first meeting him, however, the impression he gives off is far from loveable. This aura doesn’t improve all too much, as the majority of the game his attitude appears rather surly. Sometimes to the point where he starts to complain about little things, such as the cold in the city of Ary. When hearing him speak, it's hard to believe he's not even thirty years old yet.

After being approached by Cress and Mint in his library in Euclid, Klarth was only interested in making money off of them. In response to their request to learn more about magic, he stated that a standard course would cost them roughly 100.000 Gald. Furthermore, after the two explained they wanted to stop Dhaos, Klarth was convinced it was just an excuse for them to receive magic lessons for free. The mere idea of challenging the Demon Lord was ludicrous to him. However, thanks to a little manipulation from his assistant Mirald, Klarth ended up joining Cress’ party anyway. As someone who had been studying the art of Summoning for several years now, he found this the perfect opportunity to put his knowledge to the test. He remained the voice of reason throughout the entire journey. Whenever the party would threaten to lose track of what’s important, Klarth would snap their attention back to what really mattered. An example of this is in the village of Japon, where they’re asked to search for Suzu’s parents. Klarth found this to be unrelated to their journey. Furthermore, he thought that helping Rhea find out why the village of Hamel had been burned down by Demitel would be a waste of time. It was only due to Cress and Mint’s persistence that they decided to investigate the matter. One final example is that after learning Dhaos' true objectives, Klarth was the one who pointed out they were different from him, because they didn't go around killing innocent people to realize their goals.

Of course, Klarth would be an extremely one-sided character if he served only as the voice of reason. There are plenty of irrational, if not eccentric character traits to balance out his wisdom. Pride and arrogance are only few of them. He also has somewhat of a short temper. In response to Mirald calling him immature and undependable, he snaps almost immediately, claiming no one else but him has the power to aid Cress and Mint in their quest. This arrogance, heightened to the point of comedy relief, is shown quite clearly in the OVA where he boasts about his Summoning Skills and refers to himself as “The Great Klarth F. Lester”. One of his soft spots, implied in the game (and strengthened by a relatively official bonus movie known as “Apple Gummi”), is Mirald Rune. Before the final battle, while the other party members are having talks with their ‘soulmates’, Klarth asks Origin to tap into the past and show him an image of Mirald. He also acts extremely embarrassed about this, giving his request as somewhat of a mumble.

As if those traits aren’t enough show the opposite side of the coin, there is one other aspect of Klarth worth noting. He is, undeniably, a pervert. While the extremity of this quirk differs, depending on which version of the game you play, the main implications remain. One of his main weapons is a porn magazine (translated to “glossy magazine” in the English version) and at one point he asks Cless which of the girls is his favorite. In Tales of Fandom Vol. 2, it is stated by the Summon Spirits that he needs to stop looking at his porn magazines and grinning like an idiot when nobody’s around.

Strengths:
Physical; Klarth has no real physical strengths. During battle, he’s relatively useless unless he spams Summoning techniques.
Mental; As should be obvious by now, he’s smart. The guy lives in a library, for crying out loud. He’s got a thirst to learn more and is quite content with investigating things such as lost arts and civilizations. Aside from that, he’s extremely perceptive. When confronting the prince of Alvanista, Klarth is the first to notice the peculiar bird which turns out to be a monster with mindcontrol powers. He’s also the only one to spot Arche following them through the forest of Ymir. When in Dhaos’ castle, Klarth is the one who figures out how to open the doors or stop the boobytraps. Lastly, it seems he’s got a sixth sense for the extraordinary. He claims to be able to feel Arche’s magical abilities upon first meeting her and also senses an evil presence in the forest of the Unicorn when Dhaos’ demons attack.
Emotional; As already implied in the Personality section, Klarth’s emotional strength comes mostly from applying logic to a stressful situation. When something happens, he’ll be the one to tell everyone to calm down and search for a solution. When everyone is feeling down, there is a bright side for him to find. There is, of course, the example of Klarth stressing the difference between themselves and Dhaos at the end of the game, when the party is distraught over having killed someone who would be a hero. Aside from that, on both occasions he and Arche are about to return to the past, he tells the party (especially Mint) not to be sad. After all, they should be glad they had an opportunity to meet at all.

Weaknesses
Physical; Klarth is no fighter. At all. The fact that his main physical attack consists of throwing a book at the enemy should prove as much. As Arche so expertly states in Tales of Fandom Vol. 2, Summoning means that he relies on others to do the work for him. Really, Klarth is someone who should just stay out of harm’s way and aid the party from a distance.
Mental; When it comes down to actual deductions, there’s no weaknesses at all. It is, however, worth noting that Klarth was stupid enough to accept alcohol from a strange woman and end up completely wasted. In the later versions of the game, the beer was replaced by (possibly drugged) food, but the point still stands. It was one of his few moments of neglectance.
Emotional; As already said in the Personality section, Klarth is relatively arrogant and has a short fuse. His pride is hurt pretty easily and he’s quick to go on the defensive, causing him to snap at people on occasion. Not even Mirald is excused from this behavior. To sum it up, it does make him somewhat of a spoiled child.
